Can you rip Trex?

Q: Can you rip a Trex® board? A: Trex products should not be ripped to reduce thickness, but can be ripped to reduce width. As long as the board can still be installed per the installation instructions the warranty will be valid. Please use care when fastening ripped boards, as pre-drilling may be necessary.

You can make simple cross cuts in composite decking the same way you would cut any soft pine—a power circular saw will work fine. Don’t allow blades to get overly hot when cutting as this can cause cuts to be warped or wavy. Ripping a composite board (cutting lengthwise) is trickier.

Furthermore, can you paint or stain Trex? Yes, it is important to wait for Trex to fade (approximately 12-16 weeks) before applying paint or stain. If the Trex decking is painted or stained before it fades, the paint or stain could become discolored and adhesion may be compromised.

Consequently, how do you rip composite deck boards?

Snap a line across the length of the board where the rip needs to be made. Cut straight along rip line with the circular saw until the blade buries into the material. Adjust the ripping fence while the saw blade is still in the material being cut, so that it sits against the composite board.

What is the best blade for cutting Trex?

You don’t have to seal the surface once it’s been cleaned, but I suggest you do. Do you need special saw blade to cut composite decking?

Choose a blade with a medium tooth count for the most cutting options.
